Design Technology Overview

Our department is committed to delivering a curriculum accessible to all which provides the broadest possible range of opportunities for students. One which will allow students to become self-motivated and confident learners, who can work independently and as part of a team , while developing skills for life. We aim to ensure that learners develop technical and practical competencies as well as the wider skills valued by employers. Our main priority is for students to be problem solvers who are not afraid of making mistakes. We hope our students will become responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.

Key Stage 3

Design and technology has a statutory programme of study at Key Stage 3. The statutory programmes of study are an important element of the wider curriculum and establish the core entitlement for all students.

In design and technology students combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. They learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.

During the key stage students are offered opportunities that are integral to their learning and enhance their engagement with different design concepts and processes within the different material areas provided in this subject. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to:

  • Analyse products to learn how they function.
  • Undertake focused tasks that develop knowledge, skills and understanding of design and make assignments.
  • Engage in design and make assignments including for purposes and uses beyond the classroom.
  • Work individually and in teams, taking on different roles and responsibilities.
  • Work with designers and makers where possible to develop an understanding of the product design process.
  • Use ICT as appropriate for image capture and generation; data acquisition, capture and handling; controlling; and product realisation.
  • Make links between design and technology and other subjects and areas of the curriculum.

Key Stage 4

BTEC TECH Award – Health and Social Care

Exam Board: Pearson/Edexcel

Overview

This qualification will help you acquire knowledge, understanding and technical skills through work-related contexts as part of your Key Stage 4 learning. The qualification is equivalent to and compliments GCSEs to help develop work-related skills in the Health and Social Care sector. It will help broaden your experience and understanding of where your studies can take you in the future.

Course Structure

The course is split into three components.

Component 1: Human Lifespan development (Internally assessed) Learners will investigate how, in real situations, human development is affected by different factors and that people deal differently with life events.

Component 2: Health and Social care services and values (Internally assessed) Learners study and explore practically, health and social care services and how they meet the needs of real service users. They also develop skills in applying care values.

Component 3: Health and Wellbeing (Externally assessed in February and May of Year 11) Learners will study the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and how to design a health and wellbeing improvement plan.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through tasks set by your teacher that could take the form of presentations, practical assessments and reflective journals, and one exam with a set-task.

Where will this qualification take me?

After completing your BTEC Tech Award, you will be in a great position to continue study. You can go on to further academic study such as A-levels, or further Level 3 vocational subjects such as the BTEC Level 3 National in Health and Social Care.
