Year 7

Topic 1 –Migration to Britain

This unit is designed as a thematic course looking at the big picture of migration to Britain over time. Students will investigate the reasons why migrants came to Britain and the impact they have had British society and culture.

Topic 2-Medieval Realms
This unit explores the nature of medieval monarchy and some of the challenges faced by medieval people including the Black Death and their poor living and working conditions. Children will consider how peoples’ lives were controlled and the impact that such a society had on Britain.

Topic 3 – The Renaissance (Britain 1500-1750)

In this unit Students use a range of sources to explore some of the key issues facing the Tudors and Stuarts. They learn about the causes and consequences of the Reformation in England and Europe, relations with other European countries in the 16th century, the causes of the English Civil War and the execution of the king.

Topic 4 – The British Empire
In this unit Students will look at the impact the British Empire has had on Britain today and consider different interpretations of Empire. Within this topic students will also complete a historic environment study of the slave trade

Year 8

Topic 1 – Industrial Revolution
In this unit students will answer the key enquiry ‘Did lives improve during Industrial Revolution?’ by considering aspects of change and continuity and cause and consequence. They will investigate areas such as transport, population, voting and industry.

Topic 2 – WW1
In this unit students will explore the causes, events and consequences of WW1, including the long and short-term causes, trench warfare, the Home Front and the aftermath and repercussions.

Topic 3 – Rise of the dictators and WW2
In this unit students will explore the causes, events and consequences of World War Two, including 20th century warfare and the Home Front.

Topic 4- Votes for women

Students will gain an understanding of the protests made to gain the vote for women in Britain.

Year 9

Topic 1 – African American thematic study
This is a thematic study that focuses on laws and rights, work and education and social aspects of African Americans across 4 time periods; including slavery, Jim Crow era, segregation, Civil Rights movement and the modern day. Students will look at factors for change and consider issues around race, identity and persecution.

Topic 2- Persecution

Students will study the persecution of Jews throughout History from ancient times to the Holocaust. Examining themes such as anti-Semitism and discrimination.

Topic 3- Modern World

Examining key events of the twentieth century including, Cold War, Conspiracy theories and cultural developments. Dealing with issues of diversity, equal rights and migration to understand the creation of modern Britain.

Topic 4 – Medicine in the historical environment of the British sector of the Western Front, 1914–18.
Students will study the injuries and treatment of First World War soldiers in the trenches.
