Perryfields wins Basketball award

Perryfields Academy has been named the ‘West Midlands Education Institution of the Year’ for 2023 by Basketball England.

The award recognises schools who consistently showcase the sport, with Perryfields organising teams at every age group and collaborating with West Brom Basketball Club for the last seven years.

Assistant Head Jobe Swingler says everyone involved is extremely proud to have been given such recognition:

“The Basketball culture at Perryfields is evident not only through extra-curricular activity but also during break and lunch time when our outdoor basketball courts and Basketball lunch time clubs in the sports hall are always well attended.

We have a team at every age group and we’ve consistently been successful, often qualifying for the prestigious Blackcountry Games. We’ve entered Basketball England’s ‘Jr NBA’ competition since it was launched and have been proud to represent an array of NBA teams. We look forward to our continued partnership with WBBC and Jr NBA in the future.”

Writing to the school, Basketball England CEO Stewart Kellett said it was richly deserved recognition for consistently showcasing a level of excellence:

“This award is a testament to your dedication to our sport and you should be extremely proud to be recognised by your peers, regional chair, and Basketball England staff members as a leading school within your region.

The percentage of basketball players whose first competitive playing experience is representing their school can’t be underestimated, and how many players reflect on falling in love with the game through playing with their classmates.

As a sport, we are thankful for all the work that schools and their teachers do to grow our game and have made it a priority to continue supporting schools so our game can flourish.”
